Usually, in the midst of a life challenge a person makes a decision based on emotions, rather than out of relationship with the Prince of peace. Why, because of habits that were formed from their reaction to life’s hurts, especially as a child?
A habit can be described as an “automatic practiced way of thinking, a stronghold” that was formed somewhere in your life journey, likely as a child. Often these habits are negative in tone and do not serve you well and that is why you need transformed by the renewing of your mind.
An intellectual understanding of God’s goodness, love, protection and peace is not the same as the revelation of His qualities in your life.
A scenario, a family member says something that offends you. What is the first thing you point out to God; what the person said or did and how you feel, right? Wouldn’t it be great if you developed a healthy habit of automatically asked Jesus to reveal himself in the midst of your emotion?
Don’t get me wrong, telling God how you feel for the purpose of “casting your care upon Him” is healthy.
For example: “God, this is how I am feeling as a result of what my dad said! Where are You in the midst of this challenge? What do You want to be for me in this situation?
I heard that You can be my Strength, my Shield, my Hiding Place, my Refuge, my Deliverer, my Comforter and a Faithful Companion, but it sure doesn’t feel that way right now! So, by faith, I stop and wait for You to reveal Yourself to me so that Your peace can guard my heart and mind. Thanks!”
Keep in mind that Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is the only one who can meet the deepest needs of your heart and He wants you to know how deeply He loves you! He is the only one who will never disappoint you, never ever leave you and He will be very personal in comforting you.
So be patient with yourself and purpose to develop new and godly habits that are formed out of learning to relate to and trust Jesus to be what you need in every life circumstance. It may take a little while, but the old way of responding will lose its grip and the new way will take hold because your mind will be transformed!
Invite Him in, at the start of each new day, and when challenges emerge, “Let Peace find you!”
